x A hundred years ago, street peddlers offering small bouquets, or "nosegays", were a common sight. Here, a "gypsy" is giving a free sample to an urchin in similar economic circumstances. Gibson was renowned for his drawings of beautiful women of privilege (the 'Gibson Girl'), but he was quite capable of sympathetic portraits of people from all walks of life. Note the vehicles in the street included both cars and carriages in this transitional phase of New York City life. x
