| x | Clinton Pettee's original paintings are vrtually unknown on the market, but he has the important distinction of being the first artist to depict Tarzan Ñ in All-Story magazine, October 1912 Ñ which ignited the pulp genre of magazines on account of its enormous popularity. Pettee was no "one-hit wonder" however, being skilled and imaginative, as this magazine cover attests; he illustrated numerous books in the 1910s as well as Scientific American and pulp magazines. The artist painted in a date of August 7, 1913; this was changed in the plate for publication. Motor Age still exists, making it one of the longer running magazines in history. It is not a British magazine despite the right-hand drive shown in the painting. | x | |||||||||
