xFemale officer lying on bed as maid prepares gown.x
xÒFatigue DutyÓ
Variation of magazine cover, New Yorker, June 6, 1942;
Gouache, 14 x 10", signed lr
x
xEstimate: $2,000 - 3,000x
xThis is evidently the first version of Alajalov's idea, the main difference being that the woman has an officer's hat. The changes were probably suggested by the editors at the New Yorker, and the artist painted another version that was pubished.x
xCondition - Very good overall: silk mat is taped to art board; framed. On the backing board is a label for Raymond & Raymond, Inc. Fine Art Publishers 40 East 52nd Street, New York.x
xThe famous WWII war correspondent Janet Flanner contributed witty remarks to accompany Alajalov's pictures compiled into his book Conversation Pieces (Studio Publications, London, 1942). This one (using the published image) reads in part: ÒIf our girls can guarantee to keep the war at the exact dainty point where their uniforms now are, we will all be lucky. In fact, we would like to have it in writing, signed by their prettiest corporal.Óx
